The annual Darby Homecoming Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in the Old South End, on Sunday, December 3 at 3:00PM. Bishop Blair will officiate. A reception will follow. For those who aren't familiar with the term, the Immaculate Conception Parish has been known as "Old Darby" and its school as "Darby College" for many years. I have always felt that IC was referred to as Darby in acknowledgement of its many Irish parishioners. Many were Irish railroaders, as were my ancestors who live in the neighborhood and attended the church.
The neighborhood surrounding IC was known as Darby and was an Irish enclave. It was populated by the Irish immigrants who worked the rail road and canal builds. Many of the Irish remained after the projects were completed. The neighborhood remained mostly Irish until the 1950s and 60s. My family has been in the neighborhood since the 1890s and I grew up two blocks from IC
