Fr. Xavier Sutton

Fr. Xavier (James) Sutton was born in Tiffin on September 22, 1852 to Cornelius and Mary (Hollingsworth) Sutton. (I couldn’t find much local information on the family, but their names all appear in baptismal records of St. Mary’s in Tiffin).

He received his early education at St. Xavier's College, Cincinnati, Ohio, and later entered the Passionist novitiate in Pittsburgh. He became well known as a preacher of missions in the South, East, and Midwest, pioneering a format where he would conduct one week of a mission for Catholics, then hold another week of missions specifically for non-Catholics. He wrote a variety of books and pamphlets to help his efforts. He died in 1926 in Cincinnati.
